2024 regional bursary recipient: Duy Ngoc Ha

What campus are you located at and what course are you studying? How did you hear about the regional bursary and why did you decide to apply?

I am currently studying the CHC42021 Certificate IV in Community Services at Central Regional TAFE’s Geraldton campus. I discovered this opportunity through a Google search about courses and institutions in Australia. My decision to apply was not driven by the bursary, but by the strong reputation of TIWA. I chose Central Regional TAFE because, as someone living independently for the first time, Geraldton's quieter environment feels safer and more manageable compared to a bustling city like Perth.

How long have been studying the course? What have you enjoyed about the course so far? How do you plan to use this qualification for your future career?

I have been studying the community services course at Central Regional TAFE since the start of 2024. I have thoroughly enjoyed the high-quality of education provided, which has exceeded my expectations. The lecturers are not only knowledgeable but also incredibly friendly, nice, and always willing to help. The supportive and kind fellow students have made the learning environment welcoming and collaborative. Additionally, the institution's modern facilities and equipment have enhanced the learning experience, ensuring that we have access to the best resources. I plan to use this qualification to look for a job in the community services field while I pursue a degree in psychology at university. This will allow me to gain practical experience and support myself financially during my further studies.

How have you found the facilities on your campus? What are the best things about your lecturers and teaching style?

I haven't explored many places on my campus, but I have spent considerable time in the library, and it is excellent. The library has a well-equipped computer room that I found particularly useful when my laptop was broken; I could easily do my research using the library computers, which worked perfectly. The library also has great air conditioning, I am particularly fond of the relaxing environment for studying.

How long you have been living in the region? How does life in Australia compare to home? What are some fun activities you’ve been enjoying in your free time?

I have found living in Geraldton to be peaceful; it's not as large as Perth but has everything I need. Life in Australia feels nicer and more orderly compared to home. The security here, supported by laws, rules, policies, and authorities, makes it feel safer. People are more civilized, and there is less discrimination against the LGBT+ community or religions compared to back home. In Vietnam, there is more body shaming, whereas Australians are more accepting. Here, supermarkets are more prevalent than markets, unlike Vietnam where markets are a common shopping destination.

I enjoy swimming at the beach here; the water is crystal clear and inviting. Near Skeetas Hotel, there is a marina with numerous yachts that I love to admire. The view there is stunning and modern. I have also visited some cafés in Geraldton, where they serve delicious food and drinks with excellent service in a pleasant environment.

Have you found a part-time job?

I found a job at a café, and it has been a really rewarding experience. The managers are incredibly supportive and genuinely concerned about the well-being of their staff. They regularly check in with us to see how we're feeling and offer support if they notice any signs of stress or anxiety. My time at the café has been fascinating. Initially, I worked as a dining room attendant for the first couple of weeks. After that, my supervisor asked me to start making cold drinks. I quickly picked up the skills needed, and after about seven hours of practice, I became proficient at the bar. Now, during busy times, I'm often asked to make cold drinks because of my ability to create well-decorated drinks fast and efficiently without wasting many ingredients. I truly enjoy my work at the café.

Would you recommend the regional bursary to other students and why? Can you offer any advice for students considering applying for this program?

I would absolutely recommend the regional bursary to other students because it offers a unique and enriching experience to live in a regional area. The financial support provided by the bursary allows us to afford things that enhance our quality of life. It’s not just about the monetary benefit; living regionally has its own charm and advantages that are worth exploring.

For students considering applying for this program, my advice would be to embrace the opportunity fully. Take the time to explore and appreciate the community and surroundings of the regional area where you'll be studying. Engage with local activities and events and make connections with people from diverse backgrounds. It’s a chance to broaden your horizons and gain valuable life experiences that can shape your future positively.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I would like to express my appreciation for the excellent facilities and supportive environment provided by Central Regional TAFE. The modern facilities, such as the well-equipped library and computer rooms, have greatly facilitated my studies, allowing me to conduct research and complete assignments effectively. The lecturers at Central Regional TAFE are not only knowledgeable but also approachable and supportive, ensuring a conducive learning experience.

Living in a regional area like Geraldton has been a delightful experience for me. The tranquil environment and sense of community here make it a welcoming place to live and study. I have enjoyed exploring the local cafes, beaches, and other recreational activities, which have added to my overall enjoyment and satisfaction with my time here.
